EJ&T - 2 Thessalonians: Jesus isn't coming any time soon, so work quietly, eat your own bread, or starve to death

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.
Although this epistle (1:1, 3:17) claims to have been written by Paul, many scholars think it was a later forgery. If Paul did write it, he completely changed his mind (since writing 1 Thessalonians) about the timing of Christ's return. The day of the Lord is no longer at hand. In fact, it's nowhere near. Many things must happen first: there will be a great "falling away," a "man of sin" will be reveled, and Satan will show off his power by doing all kinds of signs and wonders. (2:2-9)

  1. Don't be deceived by people who say the end of the world will come before there's a falling away and the man of sin is revealed.
  2. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2 Thessalonians 2:3

  3. Keep believing whatever the author of this epistle says.
  4. Stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. 2 Thessalonians 2:15

  5. Stay away from people who walk disorderly.
  6. We command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly. 2 Thessalonians 3:6

  7. Stay from people who do not accept the tradition taught by the author of this epistle.
  8. We command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh ... not after the tradition which he received of us. 2 Thessalonians 3:6

  9. Follow the author of Second Thessalonians.
  10. (Because he didn't behave disorderly around you.)
Ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you. 2 Thessalonians 3:7

  11. Let people who will not work starve to death.
  12. If any would not work, neither should he eat. 2 Thessalonians 3:10

  13. Work quietly and eat your own bread.
  14. Them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 2 Thessalonians 3:12

  15. Shun those who disobey the commandments in Second Thessalonians.
  16. (But don't treat them as enemies; admonish them instead.)
If any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. 1. Shun unbelievers.
  2. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? ... Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 2 Corinthians 6:14-17

Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 2 John 1:9-10

EJ&T - 1 Corinthians: New rules for marriage, sex, diet, women, and speaking in tongues

  1. If you think you are wise, become a fool so that you will be wise.
  2. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 1 Corinthians 3:18

  3. Don't glory in men.
  4. Let no man glory in men. 1 Corinthians 3:21

  5. Don't judge anyone or anything until the Lord comes.
  6. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Corinthians 4:5

  7. Follow Paul.
  8. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. 1 Corinthians 4:16

Be ye followers of me. 1 Corinthians 11:1

Be followers together of me. Philippians 3:17

  9. Purge out the old leaven and become a new lump.
  10. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. 1 Corinthians 5:7

  11. Stay away from fornicators, the covetous, extortioners, and idolaters.
  12. I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators. Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. ... Put away from among yourselves that wicked person. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

  13. Don't let unbelievers settle disputes between believers.
  14. Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 1 Corinthians 6:1-7

  15. Glorify God in your body and spirit.
  16. Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 6:20

  17. If you're not married, don't get married.
  18. (Paul says this isn't really a commandment. It's just his advice.)
I would that all men were even as I myself. 1 Corinthians 7:7

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. 1 Corinthians 7:8

Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment ... it is good for a man so to be. 1 Corinthians 7:25-26

Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife. 1 Corinthians 7:27

  19. If you can't control yourself, get married.
  20. (It's better to marry than to burn.)
It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:1-2

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. 1 Corinthians 7:8-9

  21. If you marry, don't have sex.
  22. (There's no time for it. Jesus is coming.)
The time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none. 1 Corinthians 7:29

  23. But to avoid fornication and Satan's temptation, have sex whenever your spouse requires it.
  24. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication ... Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. ... Defraud ye not one the other ... that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 1 Corinthians 7:2-5

  25. A married believer should stay with an unbelieiving spouse, unless the unbelieving spouse decides to leave.
  26. If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. ... But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. 1 Corinthians 7:12-15

  27. If you are circumcised, don't become uncircumcised.
  28. Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. 1 Corinthians 7:18

  29. If you are uncircumcised, don't get circumcised.
  30. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. 1 Corinthians 7:18

  31. If you are a slave, don't worry about it.
  32. Art thou called being a servant [slave]? care not for it. 1 Corinthians 7:21

  33. If you are set free, that's OK too.
  34. But if thou mayest be made free, use it rather. 1 Corinthians 7:21

  35. Don't be a slave to humans.
  36. Be not ye the servants [slaves] of men. 1 Corinthians 7:23

  37. Believers should pay preachers to preach to them.
  38. The Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. 1 Corinthians 9:14

  39. Don't lust after evil things.
  40. We should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 1 Corinthians 10:6

  41. Don't be idolaters.
  42. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 1 Corinthians 10:7

Flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:14

  43. Don't tempt Christ.
  44. If you tempt Christ, he'll send fiery serpents to bite and kill you. (Like he did in Numbers 21:6-9)
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 1 Corinthians 10:9

  45. Don't murmur.
  46. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 1 Corinthians 10:10

Do all things without murmurings. Philippians 2:14

  47. Seek the wealth and welfare of other people, not yourself.
  48. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. 1 Corinthians 10:24

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Philippians 2:4

  49. Eat whatever is sold at the store.
  50. (Don't let your conscience bother you.)
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 1 Corinthians 10:25

  51. If you are invited to dinner at an unbeliever's house, eat whatever is set before you.
  52. (Don't let your conscience bother you.)
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.1 Corinthians 10:27

  53. Don't offend Jews, Gentiles, or the church.
  54. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 1 Corinthians 10:28

  55. If a woman refuses to cover her head while praying or prophesying, shave her head.
  56. Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn. 1 Corinthians 11:5-6

Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. 1 Corinthians 11:9-10

  57. Men shouldn't cover their heads.
  58. (Because a man is the image and glory of God.)
A man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.1 Corinthians 11:7

  59. Men should not have long hair.
  60. Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 1 Corinthians 11:14

  61. Don't eat the bread and drink the cup of the Lord unworthily.
  62. (If you do, you are guilty of the body and blood of Jesus and will be damned to hell.)
Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. ... He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.1 Corinthians 11:27-29

  63. Covet the best gifts.
  64. Covet earnestly the best gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:31

  83. Women are not allowed to speak in church.

EJ&T - Acts: The four commandments that seem good to the Holy Ghost

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.
According to the book of Acts (21:25), there are four commandments that seem good to the Holy Ghost: Abstain from meats offered to idols, don't fornicate, don't eat strangled things, and abstain from blood. If you stay away from those four, you're good to go (if you're a Gentile believer, anyway).

  1. Be baptized in the name of Jesus.
  2. Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

  3. Obey God rather than men.
  4. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances ... after the commandments and doctrines of men? Colossians 2:10-22

Not giving heed to ... commandments of men. Titus 1:14

  5. Kill and eat animals.
  6. Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. Acts 10:9-13

in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. Acts 11:5-7

  7. Don't call anyone common or unclean.
  8. God hath shewed me [Peter] that I should not call any man common or unclean. Acts 10:28

  9. Abstain from meats offered to idols.
  10. Abstain from pollutions of idols. Acts 15:20

It seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us ... that ye abstain from meats offered to idols. Acts 15:29-30

As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols. Acts 21:25

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:1 Corinthians 10:28

The 110 Commandments of Jesus

Jesus isn't known for his commandments. Many people, in fact, think that he came to do away with the all of the Bible's commandments, even though Jesus himself denied this in Matthew 5:17-20.

He did have quite a few of his own to add, though. Here are the ones that I've found so far. (They are commandments 833-942 in the Every Jot and Tittle list.)

  1. Hear the words of Jesus.
  2. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 4:23

  3. Listen carefully. The more carefully you listen, the more you will hear.
  4. Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. Mark 4:24

  5. Let everyone see your good works.
  6. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works. Matthew 5:16

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.. 1 Peter 2:12

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works. Titus 2:7

  7. When you help the poor, don't let anyone see you do it.
  8. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:1-4

  9. Don't think Jesus came to destroy the law.
  10. Think not that I am come to destroy the law. Matthew 5:17

  11. Don't call your brother "Raca".
  12. Whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. Matthew 5:22

  13. Don't call anyone a fool.
  14. Whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Matthew 5:22

  15. Make up with your brother before leaving a gift at the altar.
  16. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Matthew 5:23-24

  17. Agree with your adversary quickly, before you are thrown into prison.

  18. (You won't get out of prison until you've paid the last penny.)
Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Matthew 5:25-26

When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite. Luke 12:58-59

  19. Don't look at a woman with lust.
  20. (If you do, you've already committed adultery with her.)
Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28

  21. If your right eye offends you, pluck it out.
  22. If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:29

If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Matthew 18:9

If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:47-48

  23. If your right hand (or foot) offends you, cut it off.
  24. If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:30

If thy hand or foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Matthew 18:8

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:43-44

And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:45-46

  28. (If you divorce her, you both commit adultery.)
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. ... And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. Mark 10:9-12

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Matthew 5:34-37
